A.   Google Desktop Search is a personal search utility for indexing and finding text-based files on your PC. For more information, please visit Google's website at http://desktop.Google.com.

Q.   What is ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0 is a plug-in for Google Desktop Search, which enables Google Desktop Search to index PDF (normal and image), fax and scanned documents. The plug-in leverages ScanSoft's highly accurate and fast optical character recognition (OCR) and PDF conversion technologies to create text information from image-based content. (Be sure to install the new version of Google Desktop Search before installing OmniPage Search Indexer.)

The OmniPage Search Indexer is a premier plug-in available from Google at http://desktop.Google.com/plugins.html.

Q.   What is ScanSoft OCR?
A.   ScanSoft is the OCR behind the world's largest book scanning projects, and supplies nearly 100% of commercial vendors implementing imaging solutions, including AnyDocs, Autodesk, Avision, Brother, Canon, Captiva, Corex, Dell, HP, FileNET, Kofax, Konica, Kyocera, Lexmark, Microsoft, Omtool, NSI, Verity, Visioneer and Xerox.

Q.   What languages does ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0 support?
A.   Currently, the ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0 Beta supports English. The final release will support will support English, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish

Q.   Can ScanSoft support more languages?
A.   Yes. ScanSoft's OCR and PDF conversion technologies support over 120 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. ScanSoft will assess interest in additional language versions through the beta period, which ends in April 30, 2005.

Q.   What file types are indexed by the ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   PDF (Image), TIFF, TIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP and PaperPort MAX formats.

Q.   What ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0 do/not do?
A.  
  • It uses ScanSoft's world-leading optical character OCR and PDF conversion technology to quickly create accurate index information from image-based content. It does this by finding all of the text on every page of a document.
  • It does provide access to the unformatted text in a converted document, without graphics or images, via the Cache link on the Google Desktop Search results page.
  • It does not change the original, nor does it turn image PDF into Image+Text PDF. Use ScanSoft OmniPage Pro Office 14 to create searchable PDF's.
  • It does not save as any format. It creates an index that is proprietary to the Google Desktop Search database.
  • It does not format or save layout or graphics of an indexed document. Use ScanSoft OmniPage Pro Office 14 to convert paper, PDF and image content into fully-formatted documents that you can edit.

Q.   How does it work?
A.   The ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer is seamlessly integrated with Google Desktop Search, and once installed can be enabled/disabled from the Desktop Preferences link within Google Desktop Search.

Q.   What does it cost?
A.   The OmniPage Search Indexer is free for personal use during the beta release period, which ends April 30, 2005. The final version will be available within 60 days. Pricing for the final release version has not yet been determined. Corporate, academic and government organizations, as well as OEM vendors, should contact ScanSoft for license opportunities.

Q.   Will ScanSoft support other search products with the OmniPage Search Indexer?
A.   ScanSoft can deliver a version of the OmniPage Search Indexer that supports other server and desktop products. Interested partners should contact the ScanSoft OEM Imaging sales team.

Q.   What are the system requirements for ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.  
  • A computer with an Intel Pentium III Processor or equivalent
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher) or XP (SP1 or SP2)
  • 128MB of RAM, 256MB recommended
  • 500MB of free hard disk space (for index cache)
Q.   Are administrator privileges required to install and use ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   Yes. Administrator privileges are required to install ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer. Since Google Desktop Search can only be used by the user who installed it and administrator privileges are required for installation, it can only be used by a user with administrator privileges.

Q.   Where can I download ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0 is currently available from Google's website at http://desktop.Google.com/plugins.html.

Q.   How do I activate ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   When prompted to activated, simply click the "Get Key" button which will take you to our registration website. We only require that you provide your email address, and in return we will email you an unlock code which you can copy and paste into the "Activation" dialog to activate.

Q.   How do I uninstall ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer 1.0?
A.   You can uninstall OmniPage Search Indexer through Microsoft Windows "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel.

Q.   I have a very long document and I am unable to search for text at the end?
A.   Google Desktop Search will only store the first 37,500 characters of a file, so searching will only be available on the first 37,500 characters of a document.

Q.   Why do I receive a message that my file is locked or being used by another program?
A.   Google Desktop Search is designed to stop processing when the computer comes out of idle state. If the ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer is indexing a file, it will pause and hold the file until they system goes idle again and it can finish indexing it.

Q.   Some words/pages within my images, or some of my image files are not searchable?
A.   If the image file is of poor quality, the ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer may not index some words. In these rare cases it will skip over them.

Q.   What limitations are there for what files ScanSoft OmniPage Search Indexer will index?
A.   The image must contain readable document text. It will not create index data for photographs of people, scenes, etc.
